What is a Multi-Table Tournament?
Multi-Table Tournaments (MTTs) are one of the most widely enjoyed poker formats. If you’ve ever watched poker on TV, chances are you’ve seen an MTT in action.
In an MTT, you’re not just playing against a handful of opponents at one table, but hundreds - or even thousands - spread across multiple tables. Each player begins with the same amount of chips, and as the tournament progresses, tables break and players are moved to keep the action going until only one champion remains.
MTTs provide the thrill of competing for a massive top prize with a relatively small buy-in. Although everyone won’t walk away with winnings, those who can navigate the field and showcase their poker prowess stand to earn a MASSIVE payday.
How Do Multi-Table Tournaments Work?
In an MTT, each player starts by paying the same buy-in fee, which contributes to a prize pool that will be distributed among the top finishers. Once cards are in the air, play continues and does not stop until one player has all of the chips.
Unlike cash games, blinds will increase at regular intervals in order to keep the action moving. This means that as the tournament progresses, the value of your chip stack decreases over time. This forces players to mix it up, make aggressive moves, and go toe-to-toe with their competition.
As players are eliminated from play, sometimes you will be notified that your table is breaking. That’s standard fare in tournament poker! This simply means that you are being moved to another table of new opponents, filling in the seat of someone who has been eliminated. This is done in tournament poker to ensure fair play by making it so each table has a full set of players.
As more and more players find themselves without chips, the money bubble will approach. If you find yourself near or close to the bubble, that means you are on the verge of cashing in the tournament and guaranteeing yourself a payday. Once enough players have been eliminated, the bubble is considered to have “burst”, and each remaining player now has only one goal in mind: win the top prize!
